After a decade of painting diligently in a small studio in Paris with a view only of gray architecture, in the mid 1960s Gabriel Godard went out of the city to explore the lush French countryside. All shades and varieties of green then became the domInant color in his palette and his Green Period began. He developed a great fascination for green in nature, greens mixed with yellows, oranges, reds, blues and purples.  Also, vibrant colors juxtaposed against varied green tones dominated his mid 1960s landscapes as he embraced nature’s organic shapes that he found in trees, foliage and rocks.  These Green Period 1960s landscapes are dynamic and energetic in their feeling and compositions.

In a private letter to his gallery in New York  Godard wrote, "to me, painting is not only to decorate but trying , at the same time, to open a window allowing us to reach imagination, emotion, dream...in fact, some kind of a spiritual space".
